The historical interest of Hurworth House lies in it’s exemplary status as a modest Victorian gentleman’s racing stables. This building typology is illustrative of the history and development of flat racing in Newmarket. Our objective was to radically reconfigure the interior to provide a succession of spacious and light filled interiors that opened intelligibly off a central axial spine.

Aldeburgh, Suffolk, 2012

The refurbishment of an existing stone barn into an artists studio and the linking of the two by a new two storey timber building providing garaging and staff accommodation.

Oxfordshire, 2012

This new family home and deer farm is formed as a cranked linear assembly of contiguous rectangular volumes articulated with asymmetrical pitched roofs and freestanding chimneys. The ‘knot’ at the centre of this arrangement serves as an entrance hall and fulcrum to the various wings of the house. This arrangement provides three loosely defined external gardens that diffuse into the landscape.

Northamptonshire, 2015

This new London house, designed to accommodate the continuum of two home working parents and a young family, draws on the archetypal Georgian townhouse model in it’s sobriety and careful consideration of proportion. To the street, the two storey stainless steel element projects forward of the main stone volume, revealing to the public realm the internal workings of the house and engaging with the street. Above, the leaf patterned glass room sits amongst the trees in Platonic detachment.

London, 2006–2009

The refurbishment and restoration of a Grade II listed 18th Century Georgian townhouse in Mayfair. Moving vertically through the house one experiences subtle tonal changes punctuated with vibrant, fresh panels of colour. The extensive re-planning of the basement allowed for a large open plan kitchen and dining room forming the heart of the house, opening out onto private gardens to the rear.

Mayfair, 2007–2009

Three leather-clad jewellery boxes sit in the windows of this small shop in the Burlington Arcade. Reflecting the character of the antique and individual jewellery sold, each box opens to reveal a different character to its interior, suited to the display of particular jewels. Inside the shop, leather-clad wall panels surrounding lacquered display cases turn the shop itself into a jewellery box.

London, 2005-2006

Across the meadow from the main house, this cluster of new garden buildings shelters a vegetable garden and chicken enclosure. The cedar clad workshops have offset rooflights which give the roofline the character of a small settlement.

A project of refurbishment, restoration and new architecture. The extension and re-organisation of the existing 3 storey farmhouse and adjacent barn. This larger residence will augment Phase 1 of the project.

Oxfordshire

The refurbishment of an apartment on Eaton Square in which highly-finished insertions of gloss-lacquered panelling, fireplace and wardrobes, a dark polished wenge floor and a mirrored bathroom play against floating ceilings and the original windows onto the garden square outside. Hidden lighting is an integral part of the interior and can transform its character at the touch of a button.

Apartment, 2004-2007

This new house in a secluded site fronting Hampstead Ponds replaces a low quality house from the 1950s to provide extensive accommodation enjoying stunning views. Three different types of stone are used externally, at once grounding the house and breaking up its frontage to the water.

Hampstead Heath, London

Open on three sides, and standing in the middle of a square near the Portobello Road in west London, this building aims to add life to the public realm. It will house eight apartments and two duplexes, clad in black-glazed brick with rhythmically disposed balconies.

Apartment Building, London, 2006

A three bedroom house on an open site in Suffolk. Although on one floor, the accommodation is aligned counter to the slope of the site, so raising the living room to provide views over surrounding water meadows. At the other end of the house, the master bedroom is cut into the hillside to give low views through meadow grasses. Between, the house opens to a shaded eating area.

Wickhambrook, Suffolk 2001–2003

A new 4000 sq ft gate-house and double garage built at the entrance to a 100 acre park and woodland estate in West Sussex. Clad in local untreated oak boarding the building echoes the qualities of traditional agricultural buildings. Contract value £485, 000.

"The jury was impressed by the this subtle and finely crafted private house... The interior has real drama, but this has not been achieved at the expense of practicality. The living spaces are comfortable and enjoyable and the first floor has a special quality of delight… Client, Architect and Contractor worked closely together to achieve a finished product of high quality - the craftsmanship is in tune with the fine materials. The refurbishment of a large apartment on Eaton Square, concentrating on the use of rich materials to create a feeling of contemporary luxury. Careful control of lighting allows the clients' extensive art collection to become part of the interior architecture.

A five bedroom Chelsea courtyard house, the design uses a contextual arts and crafts style to carefully occupy this corner site. The interiors and many pieces of furniture were designed simultaneously to create a strong architectural ensemble.

The refurbishment of office spaces and an entrance hall within this Grade 1 listed historic landmark. A series of panelled rooms are carefully restored and sympathetically decorated to meet the needs of a modern office environment. Lift lobbies and bathrooms have been transformed into light, clean and easily maintainable public areas of the building.

The careful restoration of a Holland Park townhouse to provide a high quality office interior. A new rear addition frees space to allow the proportions of the original spaces to be reinstated.

London, 1996

A country retreat located on the North Norfolk coast. This collection of three shingle clad pavilions is arranged to create an informal central courtyard. The angled pitch of the roofs ensure an intimate quality and a focus on the core of the building, whilst the large sheets of flush glazing afford expansive views over the Norfolk coast, connecting the interior space to the dramatic surrounding landscape.

North Norfolk, 2008

A small complex of stone and timber buildings built in the lea of deciduous woods overlooking water meadows, conceived as a small self contained settlement with entrance and exit gates to east and west. The scheme combines an indoor riding school, loose boxes, staff accommodation and ancillary equestrian facilities with a walled garden providing flowers and vegetables for the main house.

Co. Waterford, Ireland, 2006

The extension and refurbishment of an "L" shaped barn in County Waterford on the banks of the Blackwater Estuary. An enclosed and protected courtyard is formed by the addition of a new wing accommodating guest quarters. The new components are faced in flush bronze panels in counterpoint to the weathered patinated stone.

Ireland, 2006

A new 4,000 sq ft family house in the farmyard of a rural Dorset hamlet, designed as two concrete forms relieved and enlivened with timber additions. The interior is more complex than the relatively simple exterior might suggest, with long views and double height spaces providing interest and exploiting the beautiful site. The project also includes the careful restoration of a cob and thatch cottage for use as separate guest accommodation.

2004

A new house to be sited on a lakeside in a woodland clearing in the New Forest. The house’s form, emerging into the clearing from the wood, responds to a particular client brief and includes a path which passes through the house down to the lake. Constructed of New Forest oak and cob, and employing energy efficient technologies, the house will be carbon-neutral in use.

2005

The fit out and furnishing of the headquarters of an international bank in London’s West End. The project was completed through a 12 weeks contract to a budget of £1m.

30 Jermyn Street, London, 2001

A luxury development on a beautiful 150 hectare site on the river Guadiana in the Algarve. The project includes a sixty suite hotel in which each suite has its own swimming pool, thirty pool villas, sixty village houses and 140 detached villas. These villas will be designed by a list of Europe’s leading architects.

The hotel is designed without corridors. Instead the suites are arranged around a campo, like the piazza of a Mediterranean hill town, on which the various restaurants stand like the public buildings of the town, framing views of the landscape beyond. A thirty metre infinity pool juts out over the landscape.
The project seeks to set a new standard for development in the area through the combination of the best of contemporary architecture, the use of natural materials and sensitive landscaping.

Portugal, 2004

A large contemporary house set in 100 acres of landscaped parkland on the fringe of Chelmsford. Each aspect of the house opens itself to a different approach and at frequent points the volume dissolves into voids, external spaces, cross axes, reflections and planting.

The project was exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2005 and was also displayed in an exhibition on New Country Houses at the Royal Institute of British Architects in September 2003.

Essex, 2002

The refurbishment and extension of a listed Victorian town house. The project was carried out for an architectural journalist and creates a stronger link between the main family rooms and the garden via a cascade of steps from the new first floor terrace.

Furniture, 2007

A thirty-eight apartment building in a new residential expansion to Northampton, the early phases of which were recently awarded a BREEAM Award 2007 for environmental excellence. Filling a whole block, this building steps up from three storeys at the rear to a five-storey tower given emphasis by subtle inflections in plan to provide a focus at the apex of two major streets. An existing belt of woodland to the rear is brought into the building materially with timber cladding to an open courtyard around which the apartments are arranged.

Northampton, 2004

Contrary to the generally entrenched ambivalence towards modernism - intrinsically ’foreign’ and thereby unreliable - the seaside resorts of Britain, from Morecombe’s Midland hotel to the de la Warr pavilion in Bexhill on Sea, have proved more receptive to the idioms of international modernism. A white brick family home, overlooking Poole’s Blue Lagoon.
